GIA vs IGI: Which Diamond Certificate Should You Trust in Hong Kong?

Reviewed by Winnie GIA-certified Gemologist Updated Jul 29, 2026

GIA applies the stricter, more internationally recognised grading standard, so a GIA-graded diamond typically costs more than an IGI-graded diamond of the same nominal grade. IGI is a legitimate lab, but its grading — especially for lab-grown diamonds — has historically run somewhat more leniently than GIA's.

Almost every certified diamond sold in Hong Kong carries either a GIA (Gemological Institute of America) or an IGI (International Gemological Institute) report. Both are real, internationally operating laboratories — but they are not interchangeable, and the difference matters more than most first-time buyers expect.

What GIA and IGI actually do

Both labs grade a diamond's 4Cs — carat, cut, colour and clarity — using broadly similar methodology, and issue a report number you can look up on the lab's own website. Neither lab sells diamonds; they are independent graders, which is exactly why a certificate from either is more trustworthy than a seller's own in-house assessment.

Where they genuinely differ

GIA is widely regarded as the stricter, more consistent grader, and its reports carry the strongest resale recognition worldwide. IGI is a legitimate and long-established lab, but independent industry comparisons have repeatedly found its grading — particularly for lab-grown diamonds — runs somewhat more leniently than GIA's. An IGI VS1 and a GIA VS1 are not always visually identical; the IGI stone may show slightly more inclusion than a GIA stone graded at the same clarity level.

This is reflected directly in price: a GIA-graded diamond typically costs more than an IGI-graded diamond of the same nominal grade, because the market prices in GIA's stricter standard.

Does it matter for lab-grown diamonds?

Yes, arguably more so. Because lab-grown diamonds are newer to the certification market and sell at lower absolute prices, the grading gap between labs has a proportionally bigger effect on what you actually receive for your money. If you're comparing lab-grown stones across sellers, always confirm which lab issued the certificate before comparing price.

So which should you choose?

  • Choose GIA if you prioritise strict, internationally consistent grading, plan to keep the diamond long-term, or care about resale and appraisal value.
  • IGI is a reasonable choice if you understand the grading tends to run more generous and are pricing that into your comparison — for example, treating an IGI VS clarity more like a GIA SI when judging eye-cleanliness.

How to verify any certificate

Take the report number printed on the certificate and look it up directly on the issuing lab's own website — gia.edu for GIA, or igi.org/verify-your-report for IGI. The measurements, weight and grades shown online must match the physical certificate and the stone itself. Never rely on a photo of a certificate alone.

Every diamond in our GIA & IGI loose diamond search is filterable by certifying lab, so you can compare like-for-like grades from either lab side by side before deciding.
