Pink diamonds get their colour from structural distortion in the crystal lattice (known as "plastic deformation"), and are among the most prized fancy colours worldwide. Most show a secondary purple or brown hue — a pure pink with no secondary tone is extremely rare.
What is the difference between a natural pink diamond, a lab-grown pink diamond and a pink sapphire?
A natural pink diamond is mined and graded by GIA as a fancy-colour diamond; a lab-grown pink diamond has the same chemistry but is made in a lab and costs far less; a pink sapphire or spinel is a different gemstone, not a diamond. They can look alike, but price and resale logic are completely different, so check the report before you compare prices.
How to compare pink diamonds fairly
Natural pink gets its colour from distortion in the crystal structure, which is why most stones lean purple or brown and a pure pink is rare. Compare like with like: the colour grade and intensity on the GIA report (Faint to Fancy Vivid), then shape and carat. Confirm the report number on gia.edu.
