Understanding Lab-Grown Diamonds in Hong Kong

As lab-grown diamonds continue to surge in popularity among couples in Hong Kong, many smart buyers are looking beyond the traditional 4Cs to understand how these modern gemstones are created. When shopping for an engagement ring or custom fine jewellery, you will inevitably encounter two acronyms: HPHT and CVD. Both methods produce genuine diamonds that are chemically, physically, and optically identical to natural diamonds. However, the scientific technologies behind them are vastly different. In this guide, Ting Diamond breaks down the differences between CVD and HPHT to help you make an informed decision.

What is HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature)?

The HPHT method is the original technology used to grow diamonds, dating back to the 1950s. As the name suggests, this process replicates the extreme heat and pressure conditions found deep within the Earth's mantle where natural diamonds form.

To grow an HPHT diamond, a small diamond seed is placed in a specially designed press along with carbon source material and a metallic catalyst solvent (usually containing iron, nickel, or cobalt). The chamber is heated to temperatures exceeding 1,500 degrees Celsius and subjected to pressures of around 60,000 atmospheres. Under these extreme conditions, the carbon melts and recrystallises around the diamond seed, growing atom by atom into a rough diamond.

Because HPHT diamonds grow in a cuboctahedron shape (14 growth directions), they have a distinct growth pattern. Historically, HPHT was preferred for producing very high-colour (D-F) and high-clarity diamonds, particularly in larger carat sizes.

What is CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition)?

CVD is a newer, highly sophisticated method that grew in prominence during the late 20th century. Instead of using brute force and high pressure, CVD relies on chemical reactions in a vacuum chamber, mimicking the way diamonds form in interstellar gas clouds.

The CVD process begins by placing a thin diamond seed plate inside a vacuum chamber. The chamber is filled with a carbon-rich gas mixture, typically methane and hydrogen, and heated to around 800 to 1,000 degrees Celsius. A microwave beam or plasma discharge is then introduced to break down the gas molecules. This releases carbon atoms, which rain down and deposit onto the diamond seed, building the diamond layer by layer.

CVD diamonds grow in a flat, tabular shape (1 growth direction). This method offers incredible control over the chemical purity of the diamond, often resulting in Type IIa diamonds, which represent the top 2% of the world's most chemically pure diamonds.

CVD vs. HPHT: Key Differences

While the final polished diamonds look identical to the naked eye, there are several technical differences in their growth and characteristics:

  • Growth Pattern and Shape: HPHT diamonds grow in 14 directions (cuboctahedron), whereas CVD diamonds grow in a single upward direction (cubic). This difference is only visible to gemmologists using specialized laboratory equipment.
  • Inclusions: HPHT diamonds may sometimes contain tiny metallic flux inclusions (from the metal solvent used to melt the carbon). CVD diamonds, on the other hand, do not use metal solvents, so their inclusions are typically tiny dark carbon spots or silica.
  • Blue Nuance: Some HPHT diamonds can exhibit a faint blue hue (known as "blue nuance") caused by trace amounts of boron used during growth to speed up the process. This is often considered a minor visual drawback in D-F colour grades.
  • Post-Growth Treatment: CVD diamonds occasionally grow with a slight brownish tint. To correct this, many CVD diamonds undergo a post-growth HPHT treatment to improve their colour to colorless. GIA and IGI certificates will always disclose if a diamond has undergone post-growth treatment.

Which One is Better?

The short answer is: neither is inherently "better" than the other. Once a rough diamond is cut and polished, it is virtually impossible for a consumer, or even an experienced jeweller, to tell the difference between a CVD and an HPHT diamond without specialized scientific instruments.

Both methods are capable of producing stunning, colorless, and eye-clean diamonds of the highest grade. Your primary focus should not be on the creation method itself, but on the final quality of the cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight (the 4Cs), backed by a reputable grading report from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) or the International Gemological Institute (IGI).
