Buying a pre-set ring off a display case is the fastest route to an engagement ring, but it bundles the diamond and setting into one price you can't unbundle. Choosing the loose diamond first and the setting separately takes more steps, but it's how you get full control over both the stone's exact grade and the ring's exact design. Here's what that process typically involves.
1. Choose the loose diamond
Start from the certificate, not the setting. Because every stone is independently GIA or IGI certified, you're comparing verifiable grades, not a salesperson's description.
2. Choose or design the setting
Once the diamond is confirmed, the setting is chosen to suit it — a diamond's exact millimetre dimensions determine which prong or bezel width will hold it securely, so this step genuinely does come second. You can choose from an existing setting style (solitaire, side-stones, halo) or commission a fully custom design if you want something unique.
3. Design confirmation and casting
For a custom or made-to-order setting, this is typically where a CAD rendering or wax model is confirmed with you before metal casting begins. This step is where most of the lead time sits — allow roughly one to three weeks depending on design complexity, metal choice and whether any hand-finishing (engraving, milgrain detailing) is involved.
4. Stone setting and quality check
The diamond is set into the finished band, then checked under magnification to confirm the setting is secure and the stone sits level and true. This is also when the ring is sized to fit.
5. Final inspection and certificate handover
You should receive the diamond's original certificate along with the finished ring, and be able to verify the report number against the certifying lab's database one more time before final handover — this is your last checkpoint to confirm the stone you're collecting is the one you chose.
How long does the whole process take?
For an existing setting style with an in-stock diamond, the full process can often complete within about one to two weeks. A fully custom design typically takes closer to three to four weeks end-to-end. If you're working toward a specific date (a proposal trip, an anniversary), start the process with that lead time in mind and confirm the timeline directly with your gemologist before committing to a date.
